I'm very proud to have been able to capture the Songwomen of the Kulin Nation portraits for Blaktivism. The five images went on display in the big lighboxes at Hamer Hall, Melbourne in the lead up to the main event. A massive thanks to Deline Briscoe for trusting me with this project, and Candice Lorrae for being a master organiser and wrangling five of the busiest women in Victoria - absolute legends! And biggest gratitude to Mandy Nicholson (Wurundjeri), Renee Sweetman (Bunwurrung), Dr Lou Bennett (Yorta Yorta/Dja Dja Wurrung), Isobel Morphy-Walsh (Taun Wurrung) and Corrina Eccles (Wadawurrung) for their time and bringing the power of the songwomen to the portraits. Blaktivism celebrates Blak cultures and Blak activism in this country, reconnecting ancient songs across the region. This special event is curated by Gaba Musik, a First Nations organisation bringing First Nations music and art to the forefront.
